No, they have natural tails.

The current recommendations from behaviorists and spinal care/physical therapy specialists is to NOT do tail docking.

Benefits of retaining tails:

  • The tail is a rudder that helps to coordinate balance and body mechanics. Without the tail additional compensations are made in the lower lumbar spine to respond to and balance movement.
  • The tail contains connection points for the spinal duramater. When the tail is removed, those caudal anchor points are lost, and the normal tensegrity (balance of tension) within the Dura around the spine is lost, and we see increased incidence of sacral and lumbosacral mechanical dysfunction. The sacrum tends to be pulled into flexion (cranial rotation) due to the lack of a caudal anchor.
  • The lumbar spine can develop increased torsional and extension strain in response to the loss of the tail's function and anchor properties.
  • Avoiding pain in neonatal patients is desirable - the immature/developing nervous system may have heightened and less well-regulated pain signals. Due to the potential dangers of anesthesia for neonates, and the tradition around tail docking, most tail docks are done without anesthesia, and the puppies experience all of that pain without pain management before, during, or after the amputation. This is not an optimal way to start life.
  • The tail is a communication tool for dogs. Without a tail, their communication is handicapped, and behavior challenges can develop, since their motives can be hidden to other dogs, and unintended altercations can happen that confuse the friendly dog or induce abnormal learned behaviors.

In addition to the health checks and care these puppies have, AKC individual registration, microchip and enrollment in the AKC Recovery program are paid by the breeder and included in purchase price of each puppy.
